DESTINATION OVERVIEW

DISCOVER Anuradhapura

Serving as the royal throne of 113 Sinhalese kings for more than a millennium (from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD), the Sacred City of Anuradhapura is one of the greatest monastic civilizations of the ancient world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its monumental dagobas (stupas)—such as Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, and Abhayagiriya—were among the tallest brick structures on Earth in antiquity, surpassed only by the Egyptian pyramids.

At the spiritual heart of Anuradhapura stands the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a southern branch of the original Bodhi tree in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta Theri in 236 BC—making it the oldest historically documented tree in the world.
