Towering 160 meters above the surrounding plains in the geographic center of Sri Lanka, the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple (Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya) has been a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries. Dating back to King Valagamba in the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises five magnificent natural rock caves adorned with over 2,100 square meters of intricate ceiling murals and 153 statues of Lord Buddha.
Surrounding Dambulla are tranquil lotus lakes (Kandalama Reservoir), the ironwood forest walk of Popham’s Arboretum, the rose-quartz mountain range of Jathika Namal Uyana, and fragrant Matale spice and herbal gardens.
