DISCOVER Galle
Originally founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and extensively fortified by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from 1663, Galle Fort is the best-preserved European sea fortress in South Asia and a living UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded on three sides by the turquoise Indian Ocean, its massive coral-and-granite ramparts enclose a charming grid of car-free cobblestone streets.
Inside the fort walls, restored colonial mansions house boutique heritage hotels, artisan jewelry ateliers, specialty coffee roasters, and atmospheric courtyard restaurants. At sunset, locals and travellers gather along Flag Rock Bastion and the iconic whitewashed Galle Lighthouse to watch the sun dip beneath the horizon.
